Finding My Own Voice as a photographer

Updated: Aug 28

Welcome to My World

The world offers an open view, and I challenge myself to fill this openness with visuals that welcome diverse interpretations. Take a seat, enjoy the journey with me, and feel free to form your own conclusions. After all, that's the beauty of photography; I start a narrative, and you, as the viewer, are invited to draw your own conclusions.

Starting a blog....

In my humble attempt to introduce you to my world of photography, I'm starting a blog with the hope of becoming more engaged with and learning more about my own work by exploring the experiences and inspirations behind each photograph. In the next few paragraphs, I'll pose guided questions that have challenged me recently and strive to answer them sincerely.

The Questions I Ask Myself

  • What is the single most important question/concern I have about my photography that I wish to have answered if I had a review?

I strive to establish an emotional connection with my photos and aim to convey that emotion through the art of storytelling. I often ponder whether the emotions I feel while capturing an image are effectively conveyed to the viewer, without the need for verbal descriptions or explanations. I wonder if the intrinsic strength and significance that inspired me to take the photo in a specific manner are evident to those who look at my work.

  • What do I hope to accomplish with my photography in the next few years?

As a passionate hobbyist photographer, I have spent the past decade honing my craft. It was only in the last year that I began to truly believe in my abilities, realizing that despite not having formal training, I can visually compose images that tell compelling stories. The enthusiastic support and encouragement I have received from the photographic community via Instagram and online curated photography platforms such as 1X have bolstered my confidence. Now, I feel ready to enter the global art scene and showcase my work to a broader audience.

  • What genres of photography do I work in?

street, portrait, nature/wildlife, sports/adventure, imaginative storytelling

  • What's next?

The single or series of images offer a glimpse into my ongoing project, a journey in photography that I am committed to mastering. While each image stands alone, they collectively contribute to a larger narrative that I continue to develop and refine.

A few Tips from Personal Experience

Finding your own voice as a photographer is a personal journey that involves exploration and self-reflection. Start by experimenting with different genres like portraiture, landscape, or street photography to discover what resonates with you. Studying influential photographers can provide inspiration, while reflecting on your experiences helps express your unique vision.

Experimenting with techniques and noticing patterns in your work can lead to a consistent aesthetic that feels authentic. Seek feedback from others and trust your instincts about what excites you. Creating personal projects can express your voice effectively. Stay open to growth, as your style may evolve over time. Regular practice will refine your skills and help you develop your unique voice. Enjoy the exploration along the way!
